Thomas Vermaelen’s current contract expires at the end of 2019 but, according to the reports from Spanish Sport, the Catalan giants are expected to extend the Belgian international’s deal by a further year at the end of the running season.
The 32-year-old struggled to gain his footing at Barcelona due to frequent injuries which severely hampered his first three seasons at Camp Nou.
Despite being handed a limited playing time under new boss Ernesto Valverde the Belgian defender managed to notch up 16 appearances for Blaugrana in 2017/18.
The Belgian did well to replace Samuel Umtiti during his spell on the sidelines and seems to have convinced the Barcelona hierarchy to present him with a new offer to extend his stay in Spain until 2020.
