Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher has insisted that Philippe Coutinho is “not worth” the £142m that Barcelona paid to sign the Brazil international during the January transfer window.
Coutinho failed to secure a move to the Camp Nou in the last transfer window, after the Reds reportedly rejected three bids.
Liverpool fought hard to keep the playmaker, but Carragher has claimed that his former club did well to sell for such a high price.
“I don’t agree with losing him in the middle of the season,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.
“At that time, Liverpool were alive in the FA Cup and are still in the Champions League
.”Liverpool fans, including myself, felt good when Coutinho stayed in the summer, although we knew he was going to go to the end of the season.
”It was put to Carragher that perhaps both the club and the player couldn’t turn down that sort of money. ‘
‘Coutinho isn’t so good, and he’s not worth 140 million euros.”
“I would’ve preferred him to earn a little less money, make sure the club had him in this part of the season, and then let him go in the summer.”
