It was Agusti Benedito who called for what is known as a “No Confidence” vote against Josep Maria Bartomeu and the whole board. What triggered this decision was what Benedito described as lying in regards to Leo Messi’s contract renewal.
Accordingly, Benedito issued the following statement in reaction to what has been occurring: “Bartomeu’s said that the contract is signed and it’s just lacking the protocol. That contract, without Leo’s signature, is not valid. Even though his father has signed, it needs the player’s signature. This doesn’t help with getting it signed. It’s possible that Bartomeu’s presence is the main obstacle [for getting it signed]. I hope that the presdient explains everything truthfully. It’s not the first time he’s lied.”
He also stated that the No confidence vote has reached an impressive 10, 715 in aggregation, and out of the needed 16,570. The second of October is the deadline to attract new votes according to Benedito, yet the club sets the 27th of October as the deadline.
Both confusion and controversy surround the deadline, Benedito acknowledges the fact that it’s hard to get the needed signatures in the right time, yet he’s positive that he will compile them by time.
Another reason that amounted to Benedito’s upheaval-like behavior is due to the way the club dealt with the death of the previous director Jacint Borras.
The following statements were also released by Benedito: “I was lucky enough to share time with him and learn from him, he was an example of Barcelonismo,” Benedito said. “For that reason I’m not in agreement with the decisions taken by the board about how to treat his death. There should have been a minute’s silence and I lament, as do many people that he’s not had the treatement he deserved. … There has been many minute’s silence at Camp Nou for people with much less on their CV than Borras. The club has reacted late. There are many socios who share my opinion. It’s an error we will not forget.”
