Speaking to ‘COPE’, Asensio revealed that manager Zinedine Zidane told him that he had never seen a left foot like his since that of Messi’s.
Asensio said: “Zidane told me that, since Messi, he had not seen a left foot like mine,” he said. “I was a little impressed, because Messi is a piece of a footballer.”
Asked to compile a player from the assets of other world stars, Asensio included Madrid teammates Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and Toni Kroos.
“Left foot: Messi … well, no, mine,” he joked. “Right: Cristiano. Heading: Ramos. Thinking: Kroos. Long balls: Kroos. And leader: Sergio Ramos.”
The Spain international has also admitted that he could have moved to Barcelona before R.Madrid recruited him from Mallorca in December 2014.
Asensio told COPE: “Mallorca had a lot of problems and there was an option to sign [for Barcelona]. Not only for Barcelona but other teams. However, at the end the following winter I joined Real Madrid,”
“It was destiny. The move to Barça didn’t go ahead and I joined R.Madrid.”
“Real Mallorca signed me when I was a nine-year-old, but it was my parents who decided but every boy has dreams.”
Asensio also expressed his surprise at Neymar’s departure from Camp Nou, after the Brazilian joined Paris Saint-Germain in a world-record fee of €222m earlier this summer.
He added: “We thought it was strange that Neymar left Barcelona.”
“He was an important player for them and they couldn’t hold onto him. It seemed a bit strange.”
